January 14th & 21st
9:00am - 12:00pm

UPDATE: Due to the predicted winter storm this weekend, we are postponing the start of this workshop. The new dates will be January 14th & 21st, 9am-Noon each day.

Please reach out to info@apprenticeshop.org with any questions — we appreciate your understanding!

Made primarily of sailcloth, the ditty bag is the perfect introduction to the art of sailmaking. Join Mike Bartles, co-owner of M&H Bartles, Sailmakers, to explore the fundamental techniques of the sailmaker.

As you hand-sew your own canvas bag, you will learn the flat seam or satin stitch, the basting stitch and the round stitch as they apply to the manufacture of historic sails. The second day of the workshop will then pivot to sail finishing techniques, as you gain an introduction to 3-strand rope-work by making grommets and splicing as well as sewing eyelets and grommets.

This workshop is suitable for ages 14 and up. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult participant. All tools and materials are provided.

Mike learned the fundamentals of sailmaking during his tenure at Mystic Seaport Museum under the tutelage of Captain Dan Moreland, of Picton Castle. In 2013, he joined the crew of the storied Nathaniel Wilson sail loft where he had the opportunity to make sails for numerous historic vessels, including the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, Niagara, Pride of Baltimore II, Sultana and Kalmar Nyckel. In 2018 Mike and his wife opened their own sail loft, M&H Bartles, Sailmakers in Boothbay, Maine.
