World Voyaging

2019-2020 Lecture Series with speaker Hannah Gray. Open to the public with a suggested donation of $10.

In 2004, having never sailed out of sight of land, Hannah accepted a position as the mate aboard a 43' Nautor ketch. The mission was to spend the next three years sailing around the world, collecting stories to share with the elementary school classrooms that were to follow their voyage. Onboard, they created, and starred in, literacy curriculum focusing on the science and social studies of the places they visited. Meanwhile, they were also learning the skills needed for blue water sailing. Over 20,000 nautical miles and 25 countries later, Hannah stepped off the boat, ready to embark on her newfound career as a professional mariner.

Hannah Gray has worked as a professional mariner for the past sixteen years. Much of her work has supported either educational or scientific missions at sea, including sailing tall ships throughout the Eastern seaboard, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa, teaching at maritime academies in Maine and New York, and working in Antartica and California aboard scientific research vessels. She currently splits her time between project management of major vessel refits and voyaging in support of science.
