This unique collaboration between A Morning in Maine and The Apprenticeshop offers an insider’s view of Rockland’s vibrant working waterfront—one dedicated to crafting wooden boats, the other to sailing them through the rugged beauty of Penobscot Bay.
Your journey begins aboard a classic wooden ketch, where Captain Tyler will guide you through Rockland’s historic harbor, past the iconic Breakwater Light and the granite islands of Penobscot Bay. Learn about Maine’s deep maritime roots, take the helm, or simply enjoy the salt air as you sail through these storied waters. Then, step ashore for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes experience at The Apprenticeshop, where wooden boats are still built by hand. Get a glimpse into the craftsmanship that keeps this tradition alive, participate in a hands-on woodworking activity, and uncover a deeper connection to the artistry of boatbuilding. 1:00 - 3:00 PM | Sail aboard A Morning in Maine
Depart from Rockland’s working waterfront on a classic wooden ketch.
Take in stunning views of the Rockland Breakwater Light, Owl’s Head, and the rugged islands of Penobscot Bay.
Learn about Maine’s maritime history or join the crew in raising sails and taking the helm.
3:00 - 5:00 PM | Hands-on at The Apprenticeshop
Go behind the scenes of a traditional boatbuilding workshop.
Engage in a hands-on woodworking activity and explore the craftsmanship behind wooden boats.
Walk away with a new appreciation for the skill and dedication that keep these traditions alive.

Arrive at the dock by 12:30 PM to allow time for parking and check-in.
If you have not arrived by 12:55pm, it’s considered a “no-show” and refunds unfortunately will not be given.
• Bathrooms: There is a porta-potty at Middle Pier, and the nearest flushing toilet is 0.5 miles away at the public restrooms on on Tilson Ave (anticipate a 5-10 minute walk each way). There is a small toilet on board for emergencies, but we ask that you try to use shoreside facilities before you board.
• This is a one-way journey, ending 0.8 miles from your starting point at the other end of Rockland’s Main Street.
• Taxi service is limited in the area.
