Build your own toboggan in this Saturday and Sunday workshop! They are suitable for racing or casual recreation. Since many participants build to race their toboggans in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships, our toboggan design meets the race requirements. Techniques covered in this workshop include steam bending, drilling, sanding, and riveting. We will discuss finishing techniques and materials, but teams will be responsible for finishing their own toboggans after the conclusion of the workshop.

Great for families, youth groups and those preparing for the toboggan championships! All tools and materials are provided with the exception of cushions for racing. This class is suitable for ages 12 and up. Participants under 18 must complete a waiver and be accompanied by an adult to participate in the class.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

João Strout-Bentes teaches Boatbuilding and Seamanship at The Apprenticeshop. João grew up in Setúbal, Portugal and studied and practiced architecture before finding out about the Apprenticeshop while volunteering at Albaola in the Basque Country, Spain. He completed a two year apprenticeship and then went on to work as the Shop Manager at the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine. He returned to the Apprenticeshop to engage school-aged students in boatbuilding and seamanship, developing a youth program around the build of a traditional Portuguese Sailing Sardine Carrier.
